Phil Collins Quitting Music For Good! Rocker Phil Collins Puts Down His Drum Sticks!

Posted by Adam

Phil CollinsPHIL Collins has quit music for good after developing hearing problems, a dislocated vertebra and nerve damage in his hands from his 40-year career playing drums.

The Easy Lover hitmaker also thinks people are sick of him and his music.

“It’s a good time to stop,” said the star, who has sold more than 150 million records.

“I look at the MTV Music Awards and I think: ‘I can’t be in the same business as this’.

“I don’t really belong to that world and I don’t think anyone’s going to miss me. I’m much happier just to write myself out of the script entirely.

“I’m not worried about not being able to play the drums again, I’m more worried about being able to cut a loaf of bread safely or building things for my kids.”

Collins — who is in a relationship with newsreader Dana Tyler and has been married three times, to Andrea Bertorelli, Jill Taverman and Orianne Ceveyrecently insisted he has no plans to ever tie the knot again.

“She’s a very sweet girl, sweet lady but I’m not going to get married again,” he said. “I think I’m better off on my own.”

Tired of him? Listen up Phil it’s been a blessing to have you as singer/musician you are an original and indeed a legend. What you did with Genesis and as a solo artist was amazing, to step out the drum kit and and do vocals only Phil and Don Henley come to mind. Call it a break Mr.Collins but neither (Quit) or retire, we demand more music from you Mr. Collins!

  • christina

no way. i am 26 and i rather listen to phil collins than anything else on mtv.

  • Char

Sorry to hear (no pun intended) about the hearing loss…but I hope that Phil will still use his gift and contribute to the industry through teaching/mentoring/and the like. The world WILL miss him if he just fades away….PLEASE DON’T!!!! :-)

  • Do You Remember

He is a cut above the rest and to retire would be to deprive others of his gift.

  • Sammy

Phil, I respect your wishes, but am bummed to hear you are out. I must say you have given this world a great catalog of music that I will always cherish. I disagree entirely that you “do not belong” because a lot of us are in the same boat (I look at MTV and ask “wtf?”), but I agree that your health comes first!!
Thank you for the years of unbelievable music you gave us and if you change your mind, we will welcome you back with open arms!
I would love nothing more than to see you in a bar one day, buy you a drink, and say simply: “thank you”.

  • http://showbizspy Kim

I love Phil Collins! He is incredibly talented. I agree he doesn’t belong in the same business as “talents” like Miley Cyrus, Justin Beiber and Taylor Swift. It would be too far beneath him like Stevie Nicks performing with Taylor Swift. It’s a shame that these no-talent tween idols have completely hijacked the music industry.

  • Jenny

YES YOU WILL BE MISSED!!!! I have listened to you for decades and you are definitely one of the BEST!!! I really wish you wouldn’t totally retire – you WILL DEFINITELY BE MISSED!!!!

    • RayH

There’s life after music, Phil. Lots of it. I hope you are happy in whatever you pursue from here on. Thanks for all the recordings and concert memories with Genesis, solo, and backing up both Robert Plant and Eric Clapton on drums. I hate to see it come to and end, but your health is more important. Blessings on you.

  • http://thekoopmansfamily.com wazooal77

I have followed this man since early genesis days ,
its been a pleasure to listen to him all these 40 years , and like MJ , there will never be another like him , he will be missed by the legions of fans around the world , thankyou for music .

  • Vicky

NOOOOOO!!!!!!! I LOVE PHIL!!! He can’t leave us now!

  • Chuck Grimes

One of my all time favorites from back in the early Genesis days. I took my nephew to see him in Chicago a couple of years ago and was amazed at the performance and energy he had throughout the entire concert. Enjoy your time with the kids, you won’t regret it. Thank you for providing us with great music throughout your career!

    • Estabon

And then there were two … I immediately thought of the Genesis stop in Chicago a little while back and the near state of ecstasy I was in hearing the whole spectrum – Selling England, Lamb Lies Down, Trick of the Tail, etc. Phil was still quite the showman. Sad to think that there will be no more such concerts. Think I’ll go listen to Ripples and Silent Sorrow in Empty Boats a few dozen times. And then pick myself back up by blasting Dance on a Volcano!

  • Big E

This guy is a legend, there is no way he can quit. Listen to the classic song “Mama”, “I don’t care anymore”, “In the air tonight” and all the rest…

    • Michael Harris

      My Friend,
Thank you for the comments about the Phenix Horns .
I’m the lead trumpet player with Phenix, i hve been in LA for many years.
Don,and louie have passed away GOD BLESS! I run things now along with Ramhlee, all is well.

  • Kev E. Kev

Phil has given 200 times more than any of these rooty-poots out here today ever will. Gonna miss him & the Phenix horns singing It’s Alright. Good on ya, mate-God bless.

    • Bob M

Phil is a multi-talented artist. Don’t forget your fans as fade away into that goodnight. No they probably won’t miss you now because the crap they are turning out today that gets all of the airplay is not music. Look at the live performance of the BEP’s and you can see how much the artist of today are helped in the studio because of their lack of talent.

  • Q-Tip

Phil Hell To The NO tired You can’t quit I love all your music Real Talk it’s TIMELESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • gregg chicoine

commercialism aside no one can take away the glory days of Brand X thru Trick of a Tail that is what I will choose to honor

  • Paul

Phil Collins was, is, and always will be a legend in the music industry. We could never get sick of him nor get enough of his music talent. But if illness keeps him from continuing his career, then its all about the memories from here on out. Phil Collins definitely left his stamp on the 80′s and 90′s.

  • jim

phil, i know EXACTLY how you feel. see, my birthday is 1/29/58 and i know yours is 1/30/51. i also play the drums. i am an aquarius too. by that look on your face i can tell brother, you feel the same way i do. funny how things like that get through to another aquarius. take care phil. gonna miss you. oh, and by the way, really loved on the drums in eric clapton’s “bad love” video.

  • KSass

I have listened to this man my entire life and am sadened to hear that the day has come when he has called it quits. The music that has come from this Genius mind, will live for ever. We can only hope that instead of retiring fully at least keep the music coming even if it is just written on paper for others to play.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/wballz03 Steve

I don’t think I could ever get sick of Phil Collins. I will miss you.

    • Robert

Thank you, Kimberly, for that eloquent comment. I ‘accidentally’ won a karaoke contest which my brother entered my name. It was ‘Another Day in Paradise’, after he realized I was depressed about a ten-year breakup.

  • Kimberly

There’s no way I could ever get tired of that subtle, smooth voice. It was his ability to mix his emotional underbelly with tender eloquence, which made Phil Collins able to deliver and make a song so relatable. There just aren’t that many out there who can do that.

Listen to the song ‘I Wish It Would Rain Now’ or ‘Do You Remember?’ and you’ll understand what I mean.

I have so many memories. In my mind, I can conjure up his music and, song by song, it’s like a road map of my life.

    Tired? No. Thankful? Most definitely.

  • TDSeattle

Love you Phil. You were my first musical love and the first concert (Genesis) that I ever saw. You were and are awesome and you will be in my heart forever.

  • Veronica Lee

We are not tired of you Phil. You are brilliant , one of the best song writers we ever have. Who can forget In The Air Tonight , Against All Odds , Another Day In Paradise etc etc. Please do not compare yourself to those bunch of talentless marketing machine artists nowadays ( no names needed as we speak ). We will always love you….:)

  • Jessica

Phil i love your music your so awesome I grew up listening to you. You will be missed me and so many others will miss you and good luck in all you do.

  • Abu Kaura

Phil, its really great to go honorably ! U left nothing behind. But U’ll be missed by the elites
and gentle ones.Wish you the best with Kids. THING OF A DAY SUCH IS A MAN,LIKE SHADOW IN A DREAM.Gud bye collins.

  • woodster

Wow , I just love the music and singing from phil. Really gonna miss him and yes he is a legion. I understand about the not playing drums , carple tunnel for me ,, very hard to play drums and my guitar. I wish him the best!!

  • http://showbizspy.com LH

It is a shame that Phil Collins feels that way because his music, both as a member of Genesis and as a solo artist, is a heck of a lot better than the crap MTV puts out or any of these so-called performers today.

  • http://Yahoo.com Thomas Carbaugh

Phil Collins is simply one of the best singer/songwriter/musicians of all time! Music without Phil Collins is something to be sick of! When I think of music to relax to I think first of Phil. Take care of yourself and your family. You are already missed!

  • Andy Harris

First let me say I love Phil Collins. He is/was one of the finest Drummers I have ever heard play, (check out Genesis CD’s “A trick of the Tail or Duke”) not to mention an amazing singer, composer, and performer. This man commands an audience like no one else. Everyone owns at least 1 song written by Phil, or composed by Phil, or with Phil just playing drums. I fail to see why he is so depressed though, who gives a **** what Rolling Stone thinks, afterall, they think Beyonce can sing-enough said. I think a lot of what Phil is feeling is similar to the way a lot of us feel and that is today’s music is dreadfully inept and poor. There is a lack of talent, & originality dominating the industry lately, with no hope of anything improving or changing anytime soon.
I wish Phil luck in whatever he decides to do and, only hope he gets that urge again.

  • Brock Peters

    Dear Phil!

In this age of absolute crap music, the furthest thing we are is tired of your music! Your Music stands the test of time good sir! None one in this decade will ever write anything half as decent as “In the Air Tonight”. I guarantee that much.

Sorry to hear about your ear problem, thanks for giving it your all in your career. You have to know that it that was totally worth something. If you do come back to music please know it will be to open and welcoming arms.

    Yours Truly,

    Brock Peters. A fan.

  • http://yahoo david

Come on Phil, you are the most talented musician i have ever known,is there any instrument u can not play? You have a wonderful voice and lyrics…sing with incredible emotion, don’t let us down…

  • Debra Rodriguez

I have to admit I was in shock over your statement indicating that no one is going to miss you??? Of course you will be missed!!!! You need to do what your heart wants you to do, I can agree with this. I admire you and respect your convictions, but I would like to share with you, a little something personal…..as a birthday present back in May of 1992, I was about 3 months pregnant with my first daughter, I practically begged my husband then, ex-husband now, to take me to your concert in Houston….we went and its was the best birthday present in my whole life…Thank you for that!!!

  • http://yahoo.com/homepage Blondie

    to mr.phil collins,
i respect your choices!!!!! BUT!!!!! just so you know, you are my all time favorite musician!!!! i play your cds everyday allday long. when i got married, your song groovy kinda love was our main song!
my heart is saddened but with respect of your choices i will sadly miss you. i hope nothing but the best for you and your family, you will always be in my prayers!!!!
hats off to you for a great and memorial journey you have given your fans, family, and friends!!!!!!!!!
you will always be missed and thought of!

  • Joseph Arganbright

I will never be tired of Phil Collins, i regularly listen to him and Genesis. If you want to retire that is fine, I can understand that, but to say people are sick of you is crazy. You’re right about not being in the same class as the current MTV generation. You are in a class of your own, and a class way above the current class. Many of the artists today were inspired by you. Phil, to simply put it you are a living legend who will be greatly missed. Phil, please don’t be so hard on yourself, you still have millions of fans who will never grow tired of your musical masterpieces.

  • Martha Turbie

Have loved phil for 20 years. He will never retire in my mind.

    • Mark McKinney

Id say not quit or retire entirely, at least write music for other artists or produce a little bit here and there! But Phil is a great drummer I look up to as im a drummer myself and also write music too! Wish you the best Phil!

    • David

Yo Phil, Its probably been said before but if you want to
quit drumming thats fine but don’t quit singing. Genesis and all their fans need you, they wouldn’t be the same without you. A carpet crawler from way back.

  • Andy Harris
  • Joy

Sick of your music??? NOOOOOO…Phil you are a music god. Those people you see on the MTV awards don’t deserve to be in your business not the other way around. My 6 year old daughters favorite song is Sussidio. She sings it all the time to the point, I don’t want to hear it anymore..LOL

  • ED

    Phil.
you remain a favorite composer , drummer/singer. I have found your musuc to help me through life–you have so much to offer, I have all your music and never tired of any. Thanks for being a big part of my life!!! If you chose to go on, I would folow yor music!

  • http://n/a peggy

This is such a tradegy…Although I understand his reasons, Phil YOU WILL BE SORELY MISSED!! You are one of a kind and I would never ever get tired of listening to your music. In fact, you are truly considered one of the greats that comes to mind often and gives me such joy to listen to! In my heart, I hope that you WILL come back and treat your fans to some of the best there is yet to come from your gifted talents. I can’t tell you how much you are loved, appreciated and adored!!

  • anthed

Funny that Mr. Collins would even watch Mtv as no real serious music lover would give it the time of day. Furthermore, the dumbing down of all things art has been reached a pinnacle by way of those who control the media. They don’t give a crap about talent, they want free wanna bees with advertisers paying millions. This is not about great talent or music or anything. We need to figure out a new venue, mine a new vein to get the quality of life back! How long are we going to put up with this bull? baaaaaaaaa

  • Bootsey

You are the best and it is a shame that you want to quit. However we have your music and what you gave to society.
I thank you for that. Family comes first. Good Luck to you and God Bless!!!

  • Michael Tierney

Phil is very wrong. My wife and I enjoyed his Invisible Touch tour back in ’87. We play Genesis and Phil Collins videos at least once a week at home. And that is to our teen-aged children. They like his music and videos. They all play music themselves.

  • Carmen Stone

Hi Phil, your music has always lifted my spirits and inspired my soul! I wish you the best in your new phase of life. I’ve been to about 500+ concerts, and I have to say that yours at the HP Pavilion in San Jose about 8 years ago (? – can’t keep track of time) was by far the BEST I’VE EVER SEEN. You are the platinum standard! Today’s musicians can learn alot from you! Take care and enjoy each day! Thank you for your music which will be loved by the masses for eternity!

  • Your Number One Fan

You are a rare talent. You will not regret the time spent with your children. I wish you well. Thank you for all of the years. I hope that you will contribute to the radio waves in some form, because your talent should not wither.

  • http://Yahoo Renee Serylo

I heard “Home by the Sea” the other day — what a jam….. could never be tired of Phil Collins. I agree with everybody else — thanks for the great music.

  • Bryan

I grew up listening to your music. I will grow old listening to your music. Your one of the most talented musicians in the world. If you retire you will be missed. If you don’t we are all better off.

  • Tim

We love you Phil! Just enjoyed your music today driving in my car

  • http://yahoo sandra

never be tired of you phill collins!!! your music is a balm in an otherwise sea of angst!! PRAY FOR U THAT YOUR HANDS AND HEARING HEAL AND GET BETTER! godspeed dude!!!!!

  • Scott J

I hope Phil reconsiders. In fact I was thinking of some
of his songs whilst trying to fall asleep last night and I couldn’t sleep until I managed to clear my mind because the melodies were so complex and they draw a person in more than
much of what is played today on the radio. I will always consider Phil one of the best and never tire of hearing him.

  • Lalah

Mr. Collins. These new artist has nothin on you. Please don’t stop and quit the beautiful music you’ve created. I am a huge fan! We love you brother.

  • http://yahoo bruce

No way will I ever tire of your music Phil….God bless and take care on the road you have chosen. You will be missed.

  • Bruce M

You of the funniest guys on a stage, nicest person and a great singer was Phil Collins!

You will truly be missed Phil.

Loved working your show in Orlando (Tinker Field) 1987 Mama Tour (Genesis)!

I truly enjoy listening to the classical Genesis and will never grow ‘Tired’ of it!

If you read this TAKE CARE & Best Wishes to you!

  • Mary

    Phil

    I have to say, this deeply saddens me; I have always been a big fan of yours and love your music. while I can understand not being able to play drums any more, you still have that golden voice I have always loved; I will greatly miss you as I know many others will; It won’t be the same without a new phil collins song coming out; Take care my friend and know that you do have fans out here that will miss you;

  • RJ

I will never be tired of Phil Collins!! Dude, you are the only reason I became a drummer. Anyone who knows me, has it burned in their brain when a Phil Collins or Genesis song comes on, they think of me. Needless to say, I’ll love your music until the day I die. You have blessed us all with your amazing gift. You are one of the greatest musicians/artists ever!

  • Jeremy Sheehn

NO WAY! Phil if you ever read this you are NOT a wash up! YOU STILL ROCK!!!!

If you want to retire I can respect that, but you are in no way too old for the business NOR will you EVER be forgotten!

Please Phil stay in the business!

    WE LOVE YOU BRO!

SOP THE PRESSES!!! Now we do not have to hear a new record from a guy that sounds like he is straining to make a bowel movement when he sings.

    • Pinhead

bowel movement is the sound made by your mother the second you were born

  • woolyone

thanx for the sounds, melodies, percussion to the end– I listen everyday and will continue to. You Phil will be missed but treasured, thank you…

  • Bruce M

CORRECTION: (I guess my age is showing) it WAS Invisible Touch in 87! Duh on my part!

    • Paul

      A rock-and-roll classic!

  • Filipina

It’s sad to know that someone as uniquely and extremely talented musician as Phil Collins would stop singing. He is one of my few favorite singers in the world!

  • Caribbean rocker

A rocker, never , “ever” , gets tired of a rocker !! and you know, you rock ! Thank you for your great music

  • BB

Phil Collins, as good as he is/was, built his career upon the works of musical genius Peter Gabriel.

Sorry Phil. I love your work but in the end, I most strongly defer to Peter, your mentor and the true genius.

Note that I have not used the word “Hero”, which is grossly overused by young and intellectually deficient rock star groupies. Heroes are people who risk their lives to save others. How many rock stars have done that?

  • http://tributarymusic.com Early Genesis Fan

Phil’s greatest contribution to music was his incredible drumming with both the Peter Gabriel era of Genesis, and his work with Brand X Jazz fusion greats.

As a vocalist he was also very good, but there are other great vocalists and pop culture songwriters who certainly compare.

As a drummer? Not many compare to Phil’s talents playing in the progressive rock vein. If you don’t know what I am talking about, pick up a copy of Genesis “Foxtrot” or “Selling England by the Pound” and take this as an opportunity to educate yourself about not only one of the great artistic bands of the 20th century, but also a chance to learn that music does not always have to be played in 4 x 4 time signatures.

  • Taking it all TOO hard

I’m 41 and been a fan for many, many, many years and can simply say THANK YOU for a lifetime of amazing music. Bummer I never got to see you play with Peter but I have all the music to make me feel groovy… Yes, it’s sad the “MTV” crowd today doesn’t suit your music.. however, with the exception of very few artists, the stuff played on MTV is total sh*te anyway!! You are/were and always will be one the the greatest musicians this planet has ever seen as it was all raw and came from inside. NO CORPORATION made you like music on MTV today… you will be never be missed as your music will last forever in fans like me. My 3 year old daughter will grow up to listen to songs like “mama”, “like china”, “behind the lines” and yes even “mad mad moon”. I GUARANTEE you people will be listening to your music 100 years after you and I are both gone.

Love to you and yours always

  • TC

If Phil somehow reads any of these messages, I hope he feels the love pouring out here. While I admit I lost interest in a lot of his music after the mid-90s or so, I will never lose respect for his legacy upon me personally and upon music as a whole. The industry seems to have lost the script, and so be it. But musicians who don’t fit in should just find their own way outside the industry, as the true artists will be the ones who know how to thrive after the industry has finally killed itself off. In any case, while the world will miss you Phil, you don’t owe anybody anything. Do what is best for you, your health, and your loved ones. And don’t ever think that because the music world has changed, your legacy is forgotten. It never will be. You, both with and outside of Genesis, will always be legendary. From what I’ve been able to glean, you’ve always seemed genuine and first class. You’ve earned your rest, mate. Best wishes to you always.

  • Scott F

I look @ MTV and know Phil Collins is not in the same business as these people. Because he has talent and the rest of these hacks arent worthy as musicians to even stand near him. He is the most talented musician in my time!

  • Mike T

Phil, please say you are joking!!?? I can totally understand you not wanting to fit in with today’s music since its purely awful. But you are so talented and have a gift. I hope your health improves and you make a come back.

  • Bill

Phil – Sad to find out you’re going another direction, but it’s a decision I respect. I spent years listening to Phil Collins and Genesis songs. You’re in a class that all musicians strive to be. Thanks for all that you’ve done in the industry. You’re one of a kind.

God speed…your music will never die.

  • http://yahoo dan

people tired of phil collins, give me a break phil please dont quit.the music thats out there today will be gone tomorrow yours will be here forever so take a break and get back to work

  • http://www.showbizspy.com Robert

Phil, you had a life most of us only dream about I saw you in concert when I was only 17 I am now 50. You have been fortunate enough to live a life like it or not that most of us only dream about. Don’t make excuses own it and live it.

If I want to see a Picasso I go to a museum I would rather know that perhaps one day I may be lucky enough to see Phil Collins the human being again at a show maybe write the finale and tell us about it in a smaller venue you don’t need to sell out Yankee Stadium we like you just they way you are and will always be remembered as a man first whom had a talent that compares to Elton John and needs to be strong through good as well as bad times.

    God Bless Phil Collins

  • Eric Watson

I am sorry, both for me and for Phil. It pains me that many don’t really realize how formative Phil’s work has been. From Genesis through Brand X, Phil has been among the best drummers on the planet, let alone a good vocalist and writer. There are few notable musicians that will dispute this. Yea…. Phil went a little too far into pop than my tastes, but that was only in the last 10-15 years. His career was built way before that though as a stellar musician, starting prior to 1963. That is what the current naysayers tend to forget. If you want to comment, know of whom you are commenting. Many of your current “idols” can speak to that if they are worth their “salt”.

  • Jason

Man im shocked phil collins is my favorite singer Thanks for the memeorys mr. collins your music will live on with Genesis and your solo work

  • Barbara

I WILL miss you! Your music was a huge part of my life in the 80′s. Even now, when I hear one of your songs, it only reminds me of the good memories I have of some really great times and very special people.

  • bawanadick

Brand X is what he should be talking about. too bad most people don’t even know he is really a jazz drummer ,,,Brand X are the guys he was palying with before he was with Genesis,,,I have seen him several times with Genesis and they were very very good but no Brand X,,,I wish he had promoted Brand X more they surely deserve more recognition than they ever got. Sorry to hear about your ailments Phil,,,hopefully someday you’ll feel better and comeback to music ,,,Nice to see you have your pirorities straight

  • Lucinda Kerrigan

Please dont go! I love your music and I hope you will consider teaching music to children or adults. You have a wonderful gift and should continue to use that gift. I know you have health problems but try teaching. That may be the best thing, Phil. Congratulations on an awesome career! I wish you the best!

    Sincerely,
    Lucinda Kerrigan

  • Frank

Phil, if you are really calling it a career, then this is truly “the day the music died.”

  • Peter Gabriel

    Phil,

Don’t let the door hit you on the ass on the way out.

    Love
    Peter

    • Pinhead

the only peter you know is in your mouth

      • Peter Gabriel

You kiss your dad with that mouth?

Good cum back but then you are used to it on your back face down with your head in the pillow and a big bald guy named Rufus on top singing really crappy Phil Collins songs.

I WAS AND WILL ALWAYS BE GENESIS AND THAT PRICK HAD HALF THE SOLO CAREER I HAD.

    • Pinhead

      Listen “Peter”,
I know the Peter Gabriel you are dreaming you could be a 10th the person of. He does not speak or think that way at all, nor would he be daft enough to speak ill in such a public forum of anyone. I suggest you get your cranial rectotomy procedure immediately.

  • Dwina

I’m not even old and I love Phil Collins!!! What’s he talkin’? “tired of his music”? No man! His music is forever music, like Sinatra or M.J. or…Billy Idol! It’d be nice if he could read all these loving comments and ditch the defeated attitude.

  • Sarah

i agree with what christina has to say. i would rather listen to phil collins any day than lady gaga, kesha, lil’ wayne, nicki minaj put together! phil collins is the man! his amazing music isn’t just cut out with the horrible music of today :( you shouldn’t quit mr. collins!

  • http://beachcitiesdjs.com Mark Hopkins

Wow, Face Value was released the year I graduated high school. As a 26 year carer DJ I have to agree with Phil’s
lament about music these days. You don’t need talent or the song writing skills he has, just a drum machine and harmonizer turned up full blast, and maybe 2 sentences of lyric before the obligatory lame rap. I am a fellow back pain sufferer so I empathize there. Still got the hearing though, just need reading glasses. I think Mr. Collins was wrong about the audiences being tired of him. As recently as “The Hangover”, his 1981 “in the air tonight” was featured. He was great as a character actor in Buster and Miami Vice (Phil the Shill). Best wishes to him in everything he does. I’d love to see him do more acting.

  • MTV?

In this article the guy comes across as a bitter old man who has depression and self doubt. If this article ended with him putting a gun in his mouth I wouldn’t have been suprised.

Did he just watch the MTV awards? He hasn’t been on the in with that for 25 years.

The guy is at retiring age so this is a shock for everyone?

Genesis was way better when Peter Gabriel was in the band.

  • Karen

I’ve seen Phil Collins in concert two times with Genesis. I will never get tired of hearing Phil Collins. My all time favorite band and I have seen a lot or various artists in concert from country to rock. You are the best because you are unique. Phil collins songs will be heard forever. Even if he is not singing I hope he will have in put in the music industty.

  • Peter Gabriel

Whiner! Lets all have a pity party! It’s about time!!

  • LoveThe80′s

PHIL, YOU ARE THE MAN!!! I grew up in the 80′s and a huge piece of it would be missing had it not been for Phil with and without Genesis. My goodness, Miami Vice is still the number one cop show and the premiere episode with In The Air Tonight is forever burned in my mind because of the greatness of both. When I think Miami Vice I think Phil!

You have one of the greatest, unique voices.

As a hardcore fan of the 80′s I was, and still am, DEVASTATED by Michael Jackson being killed. Phil, please don’t leave us. I feel as though my childhood is slowly slipping away with 80′s icons slipping out of the picture.

I don’t want you to injure yourself but like others have mentioned, stay connected with the industry and just do vocals if anything.

And last, but not least, please don’t compare yourself to this CRAPPY music these days! Aside from a few songs here and there, everything post-80′s just SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!

The 80′s is and will always be the BEST decade for music, tv shows and movies.

Phil, there are many people out there with good music taste, and I join them in saying please don’t go because you ROCK!!!!!

  • Jerry

I listen to you every day and have as long as you have been recording. I Will Miss You.

  • http://hilton067@yahoo.com chris

Phil, your entire body of work is respected. You are loved.

  • Cee

Phil, you are right about MTV – you are not in the same category – you are head and shoulders above most “artists” today. You are a legend and you will definitely be missed. I attended one of your concerts in Tampa, Florida and it was fantastic! You are so amazing and talented. You are a legend and will always be such.

  • D.Crew

    Mr. Collins,
You will be missed. I am a big fan and have been a long time. I’ve seen you live just twice, with Genesis (The Genesis Tour in the 80′s) and your No Jacket Required Tour. You have inspired my writing, my love of the drums, and are a great entertainer and musician.

  • http://twitter@funkkid funkkid

this is a sad day in music because he is a great musician and has inspired many

  • Jason McClellan

Phil, you are one of the last legends. Whatever you decide, all the best to you. None of these pretenders today can hold a candle to you.

  • Jennifer

I can understand why Phil would want to stop for health reasons. But he is very wrong if he thinks for one second he won’t be missed. I love Phil’s music – have for many many years.

  • The A.A.R.P.

    You retired looonngg ago…

    • I am retiring

I also wanted to announce my retirement. I am upset that I can no longer go into a hip night club in New York without everyone calling me Gramps. I am irrelevant. I also have physical disabilities that I need to take care of. I also have a poor back because I sit in front of my computer and respond to these threads. I also have wrist problems but we won’t get into that here. I need to keep my back and hands in pristine shape so I can cut bread with my bare hands and smack around my kids.

Please reply with how much you will miss me and how great I am since I am an egotistical prick who needs to be loved.

    • Lynn Lauyon

This comment is soo funny! lol! I’m peeing my pants yuck I know! LOL! Maybe He’s my baby’s daddy too! lol!

No, seriously Phil..THANK YOU for your wonderful music and for giving us pieces of your life, love and music..
Dang, I’m soo sad but the comment made laugh soo hard lol!

      • I am retiring

I announce my retirement with all seriousness and you are peeing your pants and then start blubbering about some guy named Phil? Sounds like a typical night in bed with my wife….

  • Lil Whore

    Phil,

I know you are not reading this but I am going to address this to you like the rest of the morons on this board who think they are talking to you.

Don’t quit. I am having your baby and need the child support.

Don’t quit. Now Kirk Douglas is the oldest man in show business.

Don’t quit. What will the three people do who were going to buy your next album?

Don’t quit. Bread is over rated and so is playing with kids.

    • Lynn Lauyon

That reply was for Lil Whore by the way lol! You are soo funny!!

  • KP

    Such a loss!

  • Bones

I “DITTO” bigrob80305 … as s/he put it very quaint & succinctly … and to the heart!! We love you Phil & I, for one-of-many, will always enjoy your many contributions to this world’s music scene.
Jesus, I developed my career listening to your music and that was 25+ years in-the-making for me! So Thank You, thank you for helping me through some very tumultuous times … and then some.

What a great time for me(selfishly!!)

  • Lynn Lauyon

I LOVE YOU PHIL COLLINS!! And lots of people WILL MISS YOU!! But yes, we do understand your health, your children and family are the most important! Though I would love to see you in Concert again! :(
I still buy your albums to give to my good ole friends as gift and as reminders of our good ole times with your music in our lives!
You take care! Your music will always live in our hearts and will always linger in our ears and will always shine beams on our faces and will make us smile..or cry!
    WE LOVE YOU!!!

  • Ivan

I remember hearing “If Levaving Me Is Easy” for the 1st time as a freshman in college (1980) and thought it was pure genius. It’s still one of my favorite songs ever. Congrats Phil on a great career.

  • L. harris

This guy quit making music and nobody noticed , so he had to make a formal announcement .
That should tell you how much he was missed.

    • M.J.

But we wouldn’t miss you L. Harris. You’ll probably have to make more that one formal announcement!

      • I miss L Harris

L Harris I already miss you! We all do! Don’t let dead MJ (Michael Jackson) get ya down.

It is funny though. Haven’t thought of Phil Collins for eons and when I saw his name on main page of yahoo I thought maybe the guy died.

  • http://showbizspy Kim

Sadly, there is no place for an amazingly talented singer, songwriter, composer, and musician in today’s music industry. Maybe he can put on a blonde wig, lip synch and pretend to play the guitar…

  • Loved Him

I loved him as the doctor in the original Halloween as well as Escape From New York. Fabulous actor.

  • Pinhead

reading this news then all the responses, I truly hope he does as well. seeing Mr. Collins in concert were highlights of my life. Music is, but he made it that much more, his jokes and talking to the crowd, his drum solos with Chester Thompson(sp?), the music he wrote all these years, the stuff he produced (the Howard Jones songs of the 80′s “No One Is to Blame” still one of my all-time favorites) I hate to see you go, but know the toll bodies take playing for so many years. I thank you for the time you have given us all.

  • Pharoh

He was great in the role of Earnest T. Bass on the Andy Griffith show. He an Barney use to crack me up.

  • Pharoh

He was great in the role of Earnest T. Bass on the Andy Griffith Show. He and Barney use to crack me up.

  • http://Yahoo.com Tommie

Don’t do it Phil!!!!! You have some of the baddest music out there!!!!! From: A Black man.

  • Rich

Well to say you can’t go would be very selfish of us. Only you are living in your shoes. But I would be remiss if I didn’t let you know that your music is timeless and will last for generations to come. You will be missed. That’s when music was really music. No artificial stuff or filtering so much you can’t perform the same sounds in front of a live audience. We love you Phil.

  • Brock Peters

    Dear Phil,

Maybe you don’t belong in the business of MTV, but only because it’s complete and utter s_h_i_t and you’re too good for it. You definitely do stand out from the rest of the Gagas and the Biebers and the rest of the swill!

You will be sorely missed, thanks for the phenomenal music!

    Brock Peters. A fan.

  • http://Yahoo Karen

    Dear Phil,
I hope you will still write and sing your wonderful songs, that I have enjoyed more years that I am going to mention. I love your voice, and music. You will be surley,
missed by me, and so many of my friends. I hope that you will be well, and I will be able to hear from you again.

  • He is still alive?

I thought for sure he was dead. I haven’t seen him on the MTV website in a million years.

  • Dignan

He’s been pretty much irrelevant since “l Can’t Dance”

  • Kelly

Thank you Phil Collins for all the beautiful music that you have given the world all these years. Be assured that you will definitely be missed, I miss you already. I have enjoyed all of the music that you have made, old Genesis to the Disney show songs. You have a beautiful voice and I will always love your music.

  • william

  • John Taylor

Phil Collins is a legend in his own time. His musical talents are incredible. I have and will continue to be a dedicated Fan.
It makes me sad to think that anyone could not appreciate your music and your musical talents. I respect your wishes, but if you ever decide to come back, trust me you will have a following, and I for one would be one of your biggest fans, as I am today.
Thanks Phil for giving us the best years of your life.

    John Taylor

  • Kelley Abney

  • James Greek

I never get tired of your music Phil!

  • Billy Pilgrim

Would love a Genesis reunion. That would blow everyone out of the water. Don’t tell us what we’re tired of, Phil. If you build a tour, we will come.

  • Frank

Sick of your music??? Phil! There must be some misunderstanding!

  • Bryan

Phil I am so sad to hear this. Im 27 and you are the absolute best. I don’t blame you for leaving the business in the state that it is in but you have real fans from generation to generation, not just posers following the hottest thing in the moment. And your VOICE!!! One of a kind!!! Noone even compares. Hell, when I heard the news today I had “Tonight Tonight Tonight” playing on my IPOD! I only ever saw you once but I think it was the last time you played live. Hollywood Bowl Oct 13 2007!!! I’ll never forget that night.

  • Denise

Seeing Phil perform was an honor, I will never forget it. Always loved his music have it in my mix of tunes “I don’t care anymore” “Rain down on me” So many others….so sad to read this:(

Phil Collins, Elton John, Hall&Oates..Same category for me…classic rock my fav!

Phil Collins is soulful, and brings healing through his music. I have been listening to him for DECADES. I’ll keep you in my prayers Phil and I sincerely pray that all that you are dealing with, ( from playing drums- the injuries )I pray that you heal and come forward again to sharing your awesome talent. Blessings on you.

  • harold

Phill; you are one of my favorites, Im sorry you are health problems, I wish you well. from an old fan for many years.

  • Barbara

When I turned 30 back in 1979 I was walking out of a hotel in Manhattan to see Phil standing there chatting with someone – I froze – because there he was – some one I truly admired and whose music I loved – Genesis was one of the best bands back then – so instead of approaching him, I just shyly smiled and waved – 30 years later, my son and daughter surprised me by taking me to Phil’s concert at Roseland – You really had to be there to see how this surprise effected me – tears and all I watched a man whose music and song and drumming I had grown up with – yes, older but still Phil and I will really miss hearing his voice and possibly seeing him again in concert – but I say Thank You Phil – I appreciate the joy you have given through your music and wish you all the best in your years of retirement. You will be missed.

  • Midnitemuscle

Listen Phil…………You Got Tons of Fans who love your music….
Remember better to burn out then fade away………

Keep making it Happen…..if your having hearing problems turn it up louder ……….

Phil Collins Quitting Music is like the United States Balancing a Budget ain’t never going to happen

Don’t go crazy on us Phil.

  • aris

It’s nice to see all these positive comments, but as a retiree (from the music business myself) I can totally relate with Phil’s decision.
I had the pleasure to see him play with Genesis on their first US tour, and, also had the pleasure to go backstage and chat with him at least 3 times in the 70′s.
He’s a talented guy and a kind person to boot….but I can totally relate with his desire to kick back and enjoy the rest of his life.
Good for you Phil. Enjoy it. You’ve earned it.

  • Eric Watson

    A couple of comments….

To the postor who said Brand X pre-dated Genesis… sorry 1970′s. Genesis started mid-1964. Nice comments though!

And to another postors comment… if MTV is your benchmark of someone worthy of paying attention to in music, I am worried (when was the last time they actually featured music videos more than once an hour or a day for that matter instead of focusing in IRReality TV irrespective of their network name?) Can you think for yourself, or must your choices be fed to you? It doesn’t matter to me if you share my choices in music, it is just the concept: Can you find things that mean something to you individually as a music appreciator. If that “need” is fulfilled by any artist you can personally identify with, that is what music is about, not what is force fed to you.

    • Reality Phil

Look, all Phil had to do was put together a reality show and he would have been an MTV hit again. But nooooooo he had the gumption to think we wanted to listen to music on MTV. The nerve!

  • PRJoe

I sincerely hope that the comment about not being missed is just out of sadness for the loss of presence within the current music field… because if any doubts remain about being missed remain after this episode, I have a comment in response: 1994 Seriously Live Tour, Hiram Bithorn Stadium, San Juan, Puerto Rico, the greatest concert in my life (and trust me, I have been to many). Even though Phil played every megahit he had until that moment, his performance of “We Wait And We Wonder” has been engraved within the ridges of my brain ever since. I have always admired, and will continue to admire, a virtuoso in every sense of the word. Phil’s (and Genesis’) music has been the perfect representation of complex music made simple and enjoyable. As others have said: Sorry for your health troubles, but don’t make the mistake of taking your fans for granted. You will be present in many lives for decades to come because you have a legacy. Don’t underestimate it and embrace your fortune in having a legion of fans that love you… not many people have what you have. Hope you enjoy your retirement, because you certainly deserve it. Thanks for some of the best memories of my life.

  • http://yahoo.com Mark

Dear Phil sorry to hear of your ear problems(no pun intended) I am shocked to read that you think you wont be missed. You will be missed terribly you are a living musical legend the shitty no talent hacks today they dont compare to your enormous talent.im 51 this yr and i remember one of the very 1st concerts i saw it was you and GENESIS @ wings stadium in Kazoo Mich what a great show. Since then i too have collected many of your albums.Should you change your mind you will be welcomed back with open arms.Good luck whatever you decide.

  • Louis Satterfield and Rhamlee Davis

This is said news for both of us. We were hoping Phil would come out with another album and we could collect more royalties from him. Damn, what are we to do now?

  • Pete

What a legend, the guy is just incredible, he owned the 80′s and early 90′s. He produced for Eric Clapton, Howard Jones and Adam Ant just to name a few. His work with Genesis also great. And live, I saw Phil’s First Farewell Tour in Buffalo, NY about 7 years ago. Let me tell you I have been to over 400+ concerts and seen just about EVERY popular rock/pop act that has toured since 1985 and Collins is in my top 3 concerts ever seen, such an icon, hopefully he un-retires and decides to tour again.

  • wiseone

I want to thank you for all the wonderful music you have given to me. You will never be a has-been in my eyes. You are included in my favorite music artists (My kids have become fans of yours, too. I made sure they were introduced to the real performers). They also like their generation of music. I prefer people who can write/compose, play all the musical instruments, and sing for themselves. People cannot endure the high decibels and loud music without ruining their hearing. You and other performers experience this night after night, year after year. The once in a while concert goer usually has ringing in the ears for several hours after the show. It really bothers me to see young children in a car 6 cars away from mine and the music is rattling everything in its wake. I fear hearing loss will be rampant. I do love music and I thank you again for your contributions. Anyone with taste will miss you. I wish you well. Please keep composing, after all one of the greatest composers was hearing impaired. ROCK ON!

  • zoseph

He’s right, many of my fellow musicians and music lovers are quite sick of him, but I think we all agree that we wish him only the best in life. Although he brought great suckcess to Genesis, he killed the music in doing so. Conversely, props must be given to him for “Against All Odds.” That was a fine moment in an otherwise boring-as-hell solo career.
Still, warmest thoughts to the man.

  • Roger Ebert

I loved you as Uncle Fester in the Adams Family.

  • vinny

What the hell is a news presenter? u mean news anchor? I present the news…….

  • cadhack

Mr. Collins, I respect your choice. I have had to make a similar choice myself recently.
I’ve seen you live with Genesis and solo, and those
were both on the top my “best ever” shows.
Do try and keep writing and singing?
All The Best on ya man.

  • Kate

No one knew music and had a passion for it like Phil Collins (I don’t think anyone will especially today). God bless you and your family.

  • Angel

But Seriously: Against all odds, there won’t be one more night, we can go our seperate ways and it will be another day in paradise witout having to hear from you again.

  • Rodney Hammond

I guess all things come to an end, but I always loved your music and still listen to it on a daily basis, especially when I work out!…….

  • Tim

To take a big break is OK but to leave entirely is wrong. You love and can’t quit music and you know it. When I hear a large specific number of songs you did it stays on the radio. Pure classics. Us drummers look up to you the way you and I did looking up at the Beatles etc… Buy the way our techniques were close, people like that style. I’m 51 yrs. old, play only as a hobbie because to support my family successfully as I did, I felt the need to keep away from bands 27yrs. ago. Your trade is what I always wanted. I mastered a 2nd love along time ago and refuse to start over now and go back to bands. But I had your nothing short of excellent songs to dream of. You are a permanant stamp in our culture! The MTV crowd is a phase. They envy your drumming skill. You can stay in the media Phil and you can teach that technique before its lost forever!

  • Greg

“Don’t cry because it’s over…Smile because it happened”
We were all witnesses to musical greatness. Thanks Phil for your wonderful contributions and best of luck in your retirement. You’ve earned it, now enjoy it!!

  • Splitting Hairs

I applaud the comments on here, worthy for a great career. Its a change from all the garbage posted at the NME board, though not unexpected as the Brits have a history of attacking their own people who become too famous for their liking.

  • Jane Foster

    Mr. Phil Collins
You are very WELL LIKED AND RSPECTED
    From Africa to Europe
I was a child in the eighties IN SIERRA LEONE
I remember hearing your music at parties an on the Radio and at home.
Ilove yoU, I WISH YOU ALL THE BEST
