Doris Day is Ancient! Hollywood Acting Legend-Turned Animal Rights Activist Doris Day Turns 88 Today!

Posted by Adam

Doris DayDORIS Day is one year older!

The actress and singer, and an outspoken animal rights activist since her retirement from show business, turns 88 today, April 3.

Day began her entertainment career in 1945 as a big band singer.

In 1945 she had her first hit recording, Sentimental Journey. In 1948, she appeared in her first film, Romance on the High Seas.

During her entertainment career, she appeared in 39 films, recorded more than 650 songs, received an Academy Award nomination, won a Golden Globe and a Grammy Award, and, in 1989, received the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement in motion pictures.

As of 2009, Day was the top-ranking female box office star of all time and ranked sixth among the top ten box office performers (male and female).

Biographer David Kaufman once revealed that Day insists friends call her Clara and avoid all talk about her image as America’s sweetheart.

“She feels so completely disassociated from who Doris Day was,” he said back in 2008.

“She signs her notes as Clara, she answers the phone as Clara.”

Kaufman claims Clara is a nickname she was given by her Tea For Two co-star Billy DeWolfe. Day’s birth name is Doris Mary Ann Von Kappelhoff.

Love Doris Day (or Clara). Her example epitomizes the respect women should show in their work. Thank you Clara!!

    • Tom

In her day, Doris was way hotter than any of the modern so-called babes of today. Check out the nude pics that just surfaced of Doris when she was about 22 at http://LxCURL.com/hot-picts
      What a body!

Doris Day is the perfect example of a TRUE HOLLYWOOD LEGEND!Not only is she extremely talented in acting and singing but she has maintained her dignity throughout the hardships she endured. She is still the beautiful lady with the dazzling smile and sense of humor not to mention her devotion to animals. In my opinion, it doesn’t get any better than Doris Day-HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY DORIS from Cape Cod, Massachusetts.and many more….

Became a fan when as a 14-year old WWII sailor I heard your recording of Sentimental Journey. Got a big crush on you when I saw Romance on the High Seas and the follow-up My Dream Is Yours also with a favorite Jack Carson. A My wife of nearly sixty years and I still watch both a time or two each year. She agrees with me you were the best natural actress in our lifetime. Thanks for the memories!

  • R. D.

I cannot believe the word “Ancient” associated with Doris or Clara. She is a wonderful role model for many women of the world and I hope she has a wonderful birthday! By Golly!

    • You daddy

You’re an ass. Clean up your act or ill clean it up for ya.

  • Robert

What a stupid headline. Where is your respect, you MORONS?

    And she’s 88, not 80. Fking idiots……….

    • You daddy

      robert is gay

  • David Reep

David Kauffman never met, never had anything to do with Doris Day. His book is all borrowed bits and pieces. By the time he wrote his “book” all of Miss Day’s contemporaries were gone including her beloved son. Her co stars used to jokingly call her by various nick names. Doris wrote her own biography with author A.E. Hotchner in 1975 called Doris Day, Her Own Story. I have known Doris since the early 1970′s and have corresponded with her since I was a mere kid myself long before that.
Happy Birthday greetings to Doris Day today on her Birthday, April 3, 2011. She is a friend and a star of great magnitude and the most wonderful animal lover still going strong today.p.s. whoever wrote the article please learn to spell.

  • http://showbizspy frank

I find it terribly rude your writer called Doris ancient. How immature and disrrespectful!!

Clara is a “class act”. Happy Birthday lady!

umm betty white is 89 and has her own show. life is how you live it and not a number.

  • http://yahoo david baccari

Is Betty White ancient too, at 89?????Doris Day always a favorite of mine, as a singer and and actress, both comedic and dramatic. I still listen to her regularly, and watch her movies. All very entertaining. I wish we could go back to when life was easier and MUCH better than it is now. Did anyone know she was considerd for Mrs. Robinson in The Graduate???

  • http://yahoo melinda

I grew up on Classic Doris Day and Rock Hudson movies. They were the most Romantic and Funny Movies I’ve ever seen including todays movies. I love what Doris Day represents as an Actor and a Human Being. I am also an Avid Dog lover and Animal Rescuer, most likely values I got from growing up as a Doris Day Fan. Happy Birthday Clara and many many more.

    • Gil C

Whoa! Disagree completely. Her serious work is found in the recordings from the American songbook. Search them out. Great stuff, search it out sometime.

  • Devin

Doris was/is hot but her vocal… no way. I’m glad she got into film and TV.

  • http://yahoo Carebear

You (who ever used the word ancient) need a dictionary. She is far from ancient!! I can’t believe that we are not given the gift of reruns. I love everything she has ever done & would watch her over & over if given the chance. I really love the comedy side of her career. Would love to know if she has a web site.
If someone out there is reading this that has any influence in the industry, Please show her reruns. HAPPY BIRTHDAY Sweetie!!

  • Monica Johnson

    Happy Birthday Clara (D.D.)
For those who would write something so disrespectful and for those who you publish it, Pray that you make it to that age and achieve something awesome to be remembered.

  • Ed

Ancient? Where’s the respect and love? This country is going to the dogs!

  • http://yahoo david baccari

Turner Classic Movies shows her movies regularly.Romance on the High Seas was just on last week. By the way!!! Her voice was perfect, soothing and sometimes very sexy!!!I can’t think of one new singer today that will be remembered more than a couple of years, nevermind for decades.

    • Carrie

I have loved Doris Day as long as I can remember. She is certainly not ancient. I do agree that this depiction of her is quite disrespectful. She was and still is a classy and beautiful woman – full of self respect. I have recorded almost all of her movies and whenever there isn’t anything else on, I watch those movies. She is a legacy! I love her spunk and humor. I would much rather see Doris in the news than any of our younger actors of late who have nothing good to report. You never hear anything bad about Doris.
I wish her a day as beautiful as she is…

  • stephen

    Clara,
Grew up. She knows that the media is simply a vast, shining lie. No “star” is what they pretend to be. Hundreds, if not thousands, of people work diligently to present a believable lie. That’s entertainment!

  • Karie

Ancient my Aunt Fanny. what a stupid, rude and ignorant headline. Not only is she a wonderful role model, she didn’t desert her friend Rock Hudson after he was diagnosed with AIDS. A real lady, a decent and caring human being and a real sweetheart. God Bless you Clara.

  • Joanne Stewart

I LOVED Doris Day my whole life. Her rendition of Sentimental Journey is yet to be outdone by anyone. Her movies are wholesome, awesome, family friendly movies. Happy Birthday dear Clara……..Hugs, from an adoring fan. ♥

  • Patti Weatherston

Happy Birthday to a true legend!! I grew up in the 70′s but loved to watch all the oldies! Doris Day movies were one of my favorites! What wholesome movies and what a classy lady and to love animals the way she does….priceless! May you have a wonderful day snuggled with your puppies!!

  • Charles

Happy Birthday Doris! This article is not very credible, so, I will not assuming you prefer to be called “Clara”. I’m a big fan, always have been. Rock Hudson heard you singing on the radio as he sailed into San Francisco Bay after WWII (at least that is that is what is reported in his bio).

Thanks for sharing your beautiful voice and talent.

Pillow Talk will keep me and the world laughing until I”m 88.

    Charles

    What’s with that headline? Ancient?

Note, the author of the article does not take credit for this article. From the “contact us” link you can complain to the editor though : adam.nutburn@showbizspy.com

  • http://clydejestice@att.net clyde jestice

I love Doris Day mostly because she is herself…wholesome, beautiful, sweet caring, compassionate and very charming. God, what I wouldn’t give for nice clean pure talent today !

  • Pamela

Doris Day Clara is still the epitome of a classy lady. Yes, she has beauty that is astonishing and has shown all of us how to tackle life head on. Happy Birthday to you Clara!

    • Carrie

      I totally agree

  • Shelli

Doris Day movies are the best. What an actress, she’s so good you feel like you’re just observing someone in a situation…..she doesn’t even seem like she’s acting. I have always wished she would get back into the spotlight but I guess she wants to stay far away from it, I don’t blame her, she was a star when Hollywood had class. The Hollywood of today doesn’t deserve Doris. Her Own Story was the best bio I ever read, she’s a tough lady, she went through a lot. Happy birthday Clara, God Bless You.

  • Gary

She’s so darned optimistic, we need some actresses like her on the screen today. Optimism is what this country is missing today.

  • cooper

Doris Day is a classic, beautiful woman who greatly influenced me growing up and is now a great influence on my daughters life . I wish her the best. Hope you have a great day. Happy Birthday.

  • Susan A.

Wishing Ms. Day a wonderful birthday. She is a national treasure and a wonderful friend to animals. I know that she AND my 87 year young mother would object to the term “ancient” (or “acient”) to describe her.

  • D. Aldermaer Butler

According to her posted biographical information, Doris Mary Ann Von Kappelhoff was born on April 3, 1922. Would not that make her 89 years of age today? Can we please get clarity on her age. A previous report from 2008 suggested she was 84 then and that was in August of that year. That suggests she would be 87 today. Therefore, I just read 3 different accounts of her age. Either one is remarkable but let’s get the facts straight folks.

  • http://yahoo Dennis

Happy Birthday Doris (Clara). I loved you eversince I was a child in the 60′s and loved everything you did and are doing. You are my 2nd favorite actress/comedian next to Lucy.

  • Hilary

You guys are all off your rockers. She’s was born in 1924 (often reported as 1922 because her mother fudged the years so Doris could enter into dance competitions), which makes her 87. If you’re going to publish something for someone’s birthday, you could at least get the age right.

    • Hilary

      And “Ancient”? Disrespectful…

Happy Birthday, regardless. Will watch a few of her movies today – just gotta figure out which ones seeing as they’re all classics.

I loved the Doris Day movies in the 50′s and 60′s. I especially liked Calamity Jane. I stayed away from a parade with my church to see it.This was in Sand Springs Ok.

  • Sunball61

Seriously. This could have been a worthy story, except for the brash disrespect you’ve managed to show for someone who’s earned more accolades and done more for the world in half of her 88 years than you, as a 3rd-rate writer will ever accomplish. Manners and civility never go out of style, as Doris would have said. Too bad you haven’t learned this.

  • Tom Raines

She will allways be a young and beautiful woman to me as I have watched her movies since I was four and I was born 1958.

We found the writer to be very disrespectful and cruel to title the article this way. We saw no name of the author of the article, and wonder if he or she is in their early twenties(?) Anyway, congratulation to Doris (Clara). Someone should reprimand the writer (and editor) of this article about their values, and about how to be a better writer and citizen.

  • Gil C

Apologies, but I think if you do the math you will find that on April 3, 2011, the legend (like it or not!) is 89, not 88, as appears to be being reported. Day has produced some great recordings, and some great, great ones, too.

  • Jax

What idiot writer makes the headline “Doris Day is Ancient”? What an insult! Ok, so she is 88 yrs old. People age and that’s a fact of life. She sure as hell has made quite an impact in the world and doesn’t need some dribble like this printed. Please have some respect for the lady.

Clara, or Doris has always been my favorite. Romance was the first movie I saw that I can remember. She has been the person that has remained my favorite. If I could have been anyone else she is the person I wanted to be. The thing I know about her, which is very real is the love she and I share for animals. I do what I can with and for animals, nothing on the scale that she has been able to do. Ilove her independence, and her humor. The whole package is as good as it gets. I LOVE YOU, HAPPY BIRTHDAY.

Happy Birthday Doris or Clara. Ancient? I’d like to see the author at 88. Will that be ancient then? Respect is what you are lacking and if you don’t give it you won’t get much either.

  • David

This twirp writing this article needs to understand what acient means and start showing some respect.

  • http://AOL Paula

She nor Lana Turner have ever received the credit for being good actresses. Doris Day could sing AND act, Lana could dance AND act, and they both sold a lot of tickets for their studios. In addition, they were darn good looking ladies – emphasis on ladies, which we do fall short of so often these days. Happy Birthday, Doris Day!

  • erica

First off, as everyone mentioned, 88 is NOT ancient. And “Ancient” is also pretty disrespectful to call a woman. Who is this tool that wrote this article. Secondly, I’m not sure, but every website said she was born in 1922. Wouldn’t that make her eighty-NINE (89)??
I checked because one link said she turned 86 today and another said 88. But wikipedia said she was born in 1922 and is 89. I know not to trust wikipedia so I searched her DOB and it also said April 3rd 1922. She is eighty NINE. Get your facts straight.

  • Shae

How tacky and low class to call someone ancient. Couldn’t you just refer to her age and not suggest something like “ancient”. Go to class and maybe you will develop a bit.

  • http://Facebook Gerry Hennelly

I respect Doris Day immensely, the life she lead is to be emulated. Doris has been through tragedies and came out
not feeling sorry for herself but taking on other causes. Doris gave a voice to God’s creatures that had none. I hope to aquire a small portion of her compassion for all living things. Happy Birthday to a wonderful woman that matters.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO SOMEONE WHO IS A TRUE LADY!

From one birthday girl to another…I have watched you for more than forty years. There has never been a week that goes by that I don’t watch a movie that you are in. This past week, I watched “Pillow Talk” for what was probably the 100th time. You are beautiful inside and out and it shows in all of your films.

Thank you for giving me many many weeks of enjoyable moments. GOD BLESS YOU!…. and HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

For the company that allowed this to be published:

    “ANCIENT!?”

The writer of this article will be so lucky if they live to be as beautiful and loved as Doris Day is. There are few “fine” actresses left in this world. She is a caring and loving human being who deserves our respect and privacy if she chooses. Many of our actresses today should take note and a lesson from what it means to be a true legend. When you write your next article, choose your words carefully. If you have a shred of decency about you, then you will write an apology and get a lot of your facts right like birthdates.

  • Jak`

This article was published in 2009. That’s why the dates are so messed up. I found this out by clicking on “contact us” at the top of the page. I still emailed the editor and told him his writer had no class and neither did he for ever publishing this article.

The late Paul Harvey said that Doris wanted to be a dancer. She fell (or something) and injured her leg. If it hadn’t been for that, she would not have become an actress which we all enjoy and love even to this day. And for those people who don’t know her and understand what she did for all of us, then they don’t know what joy she brought to all of us. She brought light and happiness to us all.

Doris Day represents what America was when it was a great country. Todays stars lack talent and depend soley on spectacle to create their image. Hollywood fell from greatness as America is degenerating as we speak. The cause: Americans spoiled rotten; wanting more and more until everything around them becomes like them. Hollywood and Washington D.C. is just a reflection of the American people. Spoiled rotten kids who’ve been given everything their whole lives and never really creating anything worthwhile. Doris Day is still my favorite actress and singer and I could not think of anyone today who is even 3rd rate. Thanks America. I spent 33 years of my life trying to help this country and all I ever got for my efforts was slapped in the face.

Actors are supposed to present a certain image on film. I can’t help but believe her private life is very much the same. I watched her as a young person. I loved “Clara” then and have often wished she would make more films as an older person. Some of the comments I’ve read are arguing between people who just want to argue about crude and unimportant things. I hope “Clara” doesn’t read those. Hope your Birthday this year and hereout are happy and healthy.

Calling Doris Day (Clara) “ancient” is a reflection on every senior citizen in America who has contributed positively to this country in any way – cultural, athletic, business, family, veteran, and any other way you can think of – and has reached the pinnacle of life in their older age. Just because someone is up in years doesn’t mean they deserve to be ridiculed and put down. Each person has their “15 minutes of fame” it’s just that some have a longer 15 minutes and accomplish more than others. I agree with the person who commented that the writer of the “ancient” comment probably won’t accomplish anything like Doris Day did in her lifetime.

I love Doris “Clara” Day!!!! And calling her “Ancient” is and insult. She’s younger than Betty White and no one calls HER ancient. I love, love, them both. I know Doris hated her movies, but I enjoyed them immensely.

    Hope her B-Day is wonderful.

Happy Birthday Clara! I have admired you for years and I think it is wonderful the life you have lived, absent from Hollywood and that whole scene. You are truly a legend and I pray that the Lord continues to bless you.

Happy Birthday Ms. Day hope it was a good one. I’m 64 my children and I always watched and listened to you. To me there is noone and has never been as talented as you. It’sad we don’t see you anymore. And sad that these so called actors today don’t have your talent. With great appreciation as to what you gave us all.

Happy Birthday Doris Day! I have seen all of your movies and even my daughter that is 34 yrs old loves to sit down and watch them with me. It had always been a connection between us! Thank you for that wonderful feeling that we get when we get together. Once I had most of them but now they are on VHS and I dont own a vhs anymore. Maybe I can get them all on dvd again and spend our time together again. I love you Doris Day!

our dear Doris is 87 today. Read her book. She was born in 1924. :)

There is nothing ancient about Clara. She is remarkable in her beauty, which shines from the inside out. We loved you then, and we love you even more now. I hope Clara will release her movies for this generation of young ones to watch. It might teach them how a real lady is supposed to act. God bless you and I hope you will enjoy a glorious birthday.

DORIS DAY IS A LEGEND… A TRUE HOLLYWOOD ICON…I HAVE HEARD OF HER IN FAR AWAY AFRICA SINCE THE FIFTIES …AND I AM FASCINATED BY HER BEAUTY…THERE IS A HOTEL NAMED FOR HER IN BENIN CITY NIGERIA…THAT UNDERSCORES HER FAME …I WISH HER MANY HAPPY RETURNS OF HER BIRTHDAY

  • Marilyn

I always loved films with Doris Day, as she was the girl with morales that men fell in love with cause she was sweet and her wonderful singing voice also…No one is ancient and years mean nothing…it is the hours..minutes..days that go by..we are still same person inside, whether we are 10 or 100….

I always loved the movies that Doris Day (Clara) and Gordan McRae were in together! Have a DVD of “Moonlight Bay” and “By the light of the Silvery Moon”. The movies she was in was always so wholesome-never a bad word or bad scenes in them. Wish we had some of her movies shown more on TV! Happy Birthday!!

ANYONE WHO SAYS A LOVELY ACTOR OR ACTRESS IS “ANCIENT” HAS NO HEART or polite manners!! These people age as we do, but do you tell your parents they’re ANCIENT? NO. Miss Gabor is 93, nobody claims SHE’S ANCIENT!!!! What is the matter with people today writing heartless comments, harsh adjectives, cuss words and trash??? I will never respect anyone who does, after all we’re supposed to be kind and have compassion. REMEMBER????????

There are only two losers associated with this article and those are the writer, who is a hopeless inane asshole and David Kaufman, who is a winkie-dinkie and an alcoholic. What he says about Ms. Day insisting that people call her “Clara” is complete dribble made up from his sick mind and quite typical of the texture of his childish DD biography.

Good on those who took a moment of their time to stand up for Doris Day and to wish her a Happy Birthday. Show business today is sick and pathetic as is the author of his article.

Saw Pillow Talk when I was twelve … sat in the quiet, dark theatre absorbing this gorgeous, witty, strong, independent, resourceful and creative woman who held the dish of the day, Rock Hudson at bay until he earned her.

That day painted the picture I had for myself from there forward.

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind she became my roll model as I, at 9.1 in dog (my hat off to the Dog Rescuer) am witty, strong, independent, resourceful, creative and some say, still gorgeous … because of that person … and put up with no untoward behaviour!!!

Jan Morrow … my gratitude to YOU!!!

  • Tami

ANCIENT ANCIENT, SERIOUSLY!!!!! Ancient is for describing Egypt, Rome, the ruins NOT A ICONIC HOLLYWOOD LEGEND AND CLASSY LADY. Idiots! What are you…19….most likely! Idiot!

  • Thiavet

    Dear Doris,

Belated Happy Birthday to you from one of your everlasting fans abroad. Your “Que sera sera” has impressed me the most ever since I was as young as the boy in “The Man Who Knew Too Much.”

    The best,

    Dear Doris Day:
I have loved your movies since I was a little girl, when you had a TV show.  Then your movies in the 50′s and 60′s.  My name is Doris Ann, and that we have the same first names makes it more special to me.  Age has changed all our lives, my father is 90, and I am now 65.  I know your accomplishments in life are a treasure in your memories.
May God continue to bless your life each day.
