Mariska Hargitay: Family Chose The Name For Mariska Hargitay’s New Daughter!

The actress — who already raises 4½-year-old son August with husband Peter Herman — has revealed everyone got involved in choosing a moniker for the 1-week-old tot.

“We all talked about names because everything is a family decision in our house,” says Hargitay.”I threw out my name and he threw out his name and I said, ‘August, why do you get to name the baby?’ And he said, ‘Because it’s my idea!’

The family settled on Amaya Josephine — an adaptation of one of Hargitay’s favorite names, Maya.

“I liked that name, but I wanted her to have the same initials as August,” Hargitay explains. “I thought adding the ‘A’ was so feminine. Amaya sounded so open and feminine and beautiful — just like her.”

    marijuana. Mariska is also in Hungary name for old aunt
    whose name is Mary ,nobody would in Hungary name her daughter Mariska !

    Mariska Hargitay named her baby out of love for the baby and her husband. It really isn’t anyones business. She adopted a beautiful baby girl who will be loved and cared for. Don’t listen to the nay sayers. Love your performances as Olivia Benson on L&O. Love the show.

      I agree with Barbara, Karin and Connie!!! Wow, do folks not have anything better to do – my goodness!!! I like the name – something different!!! I like the fact she adopted a baby of different ethnicity and the fact she let her son name it and she is a praying woman!!!

    Mariska is a diminutive for Mary. According to babynames.com, Amaya is originally from the Japanese and means Night Rain. It is currently ranked #202 in US names.

    BTW my own name is a melding of my grandmothers names, Florence and Loretta and is NOT on Baby Names – but I like it.

    Unreal-people slam her and her family, with all the ugliness in the world-nothing bad has ever been said about her, she started up and runs the Joyful Heart foundation and her OWN mother died a tragic death (Jayne Mansfield)…I’m happy for her and her family!!
