Johnny Depp Denies Relying On Alcohol

Johnny Depp JOHNNY Depp tells the new issue of Rolling Stone that unlike his infamous on-screen character Captain Jack Sparrow he is not an alcoholic.

While Sparrow is an unreliable and awkward drunkard, Depp denies ever having to depend on alcohol, though he made a concious decision over a year ago to give up drinking.

“No, I don’t have the physical need for the drug alcohol,” he says. “No, it’s more my medication, my self-medication over the years just to calm the circus. Once the circus kicks in, the festivities in the brain, it can be ruthless.”

The Blow star, who turned 50 earlier on this year (I know, we were just as shocked as you!) added that he could function on a day to day basis without alcohol.

“I just decided that I pretty much got everything I could get out of it,” he tells the magazine. “I investigated wine and spirits thoroughly, and they certainly investigated me as well, and we found out that we got along beautifully, but maybe too well.”

The actor’s reputation as a drinking man may also come from the company he surrounds himself with, he admits. Pals like Keith Richards and Bob Dylan, Depp was also close friends with the late Marlon Brando.

We just still can’t believe he’s 50.
