German Ministry officials have revealed that they have not received any official requests to film Tom’s new movie ‘Valkyrie’ in the country, but insist they would ‘look agreeably’ on any application. Earlier this week, we reported that Cruise would be banned from using German military bases to shoot the movie – which tells the true story of a failed plot to assassinate Hitler – following concerns over his association with Scientology.
However, high profile members of the country’s film industry are said to welcome Cruise’s portrayal of Colonel Claus Von Stauffenberg, who is considered a war hero in Germany for his failed attempt to kill Hitler by placing a bomb in his suitcase in 1944.
Christoph Fisser, one of the heads of Studio Babelsberg, said: “The assassination attempt against Hitler is hardly known outside Germany. We should therefore be delighted and welcome this wonderful opportunity to improve the image of our country.” ‘Valkyrie’ is set to be directed by ‘Superman Returns’ helmer Bryan Singer, with Kenneth Branagh expected to co-star alongside Cruise.
Scientology is the bizarre sci-fi cult of which Tom Cruise is a long-time member, and also happens to be under official observation by German authorities and is considered as a potential threat to German democracy.
