News at Ten resurrected on ITV1 with Sir Trevor as host

ITV’s most popular news brand since its launch over 50 years ago, News at Ten, has been resurrected from the grave to take centre stage in a new shake up from Executive Chairman Michael Grade.

The flagship news programme which was part of ITV’s archive of quality programming since 1967 was axed in 1999 in a controversial move to let a feast of movies, sport and feature length dramas introduce themselves.

However, after bad ratings for the news programme (now at 10:30), the British company had to re-think the situation. The new programme will be presented by Sir Trevor McDonald with new girl Julie Etchingham, previously on Sky News.

An ITV insider revealed to The Mirror: “We’ve been campaigning for years to get News at Ten back to its home. Better late than never. This is a huge boost for ITV”.

So, the sleeping giant returns, but it isn’t so much of a surprise, as Executive Chairman Grade revealed to the Guardian in March that moving the news was a “shocking mistake”, adding that “it damaged ITV more than anything”.
