Dennis Quaid to sue manufacturer of the drug they allege injured their baby twins

Dennis QuaidHollywood star Dennis Quaid and his wife are suing a drug manufacturer for making a product they allege seriously injured their baby twins last month.

Zoe Grace Quaid and Thomas Boone Quaid “were very critical for a while” after being giving the wrong concentration of the drug Heparin, the Quaids’ lawyer, Susan E. Loggans, claimed today.

Now The Day After Tomorrow actor, 53, and wife Kimberly Buffington, have launched a lawsuit against the Chicago-based maker of Heparin, Baxter Healthcare Corporation.

The Quaid twins were mistakenly given a massive overdose of the anti-coagulant drug last month while at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center [sic] in Los Angeles.

According to Loggans, they appear to have recovered now. She said: “Everything looks good.”

She told US television that Quaid and his wife want to prevent this from happening to any other children.

A spokeswoman for Baxter Healthcare Corporation, Deborah Spak, declined to comment on the lawsuit. She said she had not seen it yet.

The lawsuit alleges Baxter is liable and negligent because the 10-units-per-milliliter vial of Heparin looks almost exactly the same as the 10,000-units-per-milliliter vial of the drug.

Three children died in Indiana from a similar mix-up with the drug, Loggans said. The Quaid twins were born on November 8.

Last month Cedars-Sinai’s Chief Medical Officer, Michael L. Langberg, admitted the error was “preventable” and involved “a failure to follow our standard policies and procedures.”

He has also apologised to the distraught couple, according to reports.

The babies are Quaid’s second and third children – he already has a 17-year-old son with his ex-wife, Meg Ryan.
