Loose Woman Denise Welch has admitted her problems with alcohol have returned and has vowed to sort herself out for her family.
The former Coronation Street actress gave up alcohol two years ago but says her decision to start drinking again socially earlier this year was a mistake.
She admits she needs to sort out her problem to prevent her family any more embarrassment
She said: “I’ve had my issues with drinking and as many people know I gave up drinking for two years. “In June of this year I didn’t fall off the wagon, I decided to step off the wagon. I thought that after two years of being sober and having treatment for my depression, which is one of the reasons why I gave up and because I was a mess, I could start drinking socially again.
“All I’ve ever wanted is to be the normal person that has a few drinks socially with friends and then goes ‘well that’s me then’, but the that’s me then doesn’t seem to be programmed into my computer.
“I’ve never been someone who wakes up in the morning and has a drink. I can go for days in the house without drinking. It’s in a social situation I find it difficult to stop.
“I suppose I’ve been kidding myself that I’ve been doing alright but I haven’t I don’t think and I think I have to readdress this. I have to do it for myself ultimately and I have to do it for my family and it’s a shame because when I am controlling it I love nothing more than getting excited to go out with the girls for a glass of champagne or a vodka and tonic and I kind of resent in a way my friends who can do that.
“I had a big all-nighter not so long ago and the press discovered it. It wasn’t the end of the world but it’s embarrassing for the family. They worry about me so much and I think they were hoping it would be ok.
“Friends who I’m with have said you appear sometimes completely lucid but then the next day I’ve had a complete blackout and I can’t remember anything, which apart from being embarrassing is very dangerous.
“It’s like giving birth. You soon forget the pain so the way you feel which is so horrendous and so hungover. Some of the states I’ve been in are awful.
“The next time you go out you think what I’m going to do is have a different drink. Because you so desperately don’t want to stop you try to make changes and then of course it doesn’t work.
“The reason I have to address it is because I have two children who I love very much and love me very much,” she said on ITV’s Loose Women.
