A fan stood in troubled Pete Doherty at a recent Babyshambles gig – after the troubled rocker didn’t show up, claiming he was “ill”
According to British newspaper The Sun, the fan, 18-year-old Jamie Bell – jumped up on stage, played the guitar and sang – after the band pleaded for help from the audience.
Jamie, from Newcastle received standing ovations from the packed-out-crowd at London’s O2 Arena – where the Babyshambles were performing for the NME Awards launch party.
A fan said: “He performed Carry On Up The Morning from the new album Shotter’s Nation. And he was good.
“He knew how to play it on guitar and knew all the words. He saved the day.”
28-year-old Pete, however, was believed to have been taken ill before he was due to make his performance.
The onlooker added: “Half the band came on and they were obviously struggling.”
A spokesman for Pete added: “He’s still attending a rehab programme, which he had to follow whilst on tour and has to travel hundreds of miles back home after shows. As a result, touring is more arduous for him than normal.”
