Alicia Keys hopes Jamie Lynn Spears will become a spokesperson for safe sex

Alicia KeysAlicia Keys hopes Jamie Lynn Spears will become a spokesperson for safe sex. The singer made her plea live on US TV talk show The View.

Speaking about Spears, who is 16 and pregnant, Keys said: “I think that maybe she can use this opportunity to talk about the ways that it’s really important to have safe sex and it’s difficult [for teens] to refrain and restrain but it’s really important because it changes your whole life.

“It’s a very serious thing.”

Keys appeared as a guest co-host on the daily magazine show, which features 52-year-old actress Whoopi Goldberg.

Talking about the effect that early stardom has on young people, Keys, 27, told the three panellists and the studio audience: “Different people have different lives and different situations. I think that it is a very intense business and that in a lot of ways you are exposed to so much so quickly, so often there’s really no limit to what you can get or have or do. “[Whatever you ask for] is there.

“You can be 13. You can be nine. You can be 47. It really doesn’t matter. It’s basically handed to you on a platter.

“But the point is that it gets very hard and difficult because most of the people in the industry are very young and we are influenced easily.”

When asked why she had not fallen into that trap like singers Amy Winehouse and Michael Jackson, Keys said: “I think it really depends on your personal situation – how you were raised and who’s around you.

“I was raised in a very tough city – in New York City. As rough as it gets – I think I’ve seen it already. “New York is [safe] now, but when I was growing up it wasn’t.”

Keys also agreed that many celebrities go off the rails because of hangers-on who are willing to fulfil all their demands. She told co-hosts Goldberg, Sherri Shepherd and Joy Behar: “That’s the case in a lot of situations where there’s a bunch of people just telling you: ‘Yes, yes, yes – 15 per cent, 20 per cent’.”They’re just looking for the cash.

“I think that it takes experience [to tell if they're lying to you].

“Everybody gets caught up in a situation where they get jerked.

“That happens to the best of us but I think that if you’re intelligent enough and you don’t want to be that type of person you figure it out and you say: ‘No this isn’t working out’.”

In her interview with OK magazine Spears appeared to agree with Keys. She said she had some advice for teens thinking about having sex before marriage.

Spears said: “I definitely don’t think it’s something you should do; “It’s better to wait but I can’t be judgmental because it’s a position I put myself in.”
