Barry Humphries cancels tour

Dame Edna EverageAustralian comedian Barry Humphries has been forced to cancel his US tour and his only scheduled British performance at Glasgow’s Comedy Festival in March, after being told by doctors that he must rest for six months because of complications after surgery.

The 73-year-old funny man, better known as Dame Edna Everage – had his appendix out on December 30. And his manager, Harley Medcalf said at the time that it was “a pretty straightforward operation and he’s walking around”.

“He’s going in for surgery this week as there have been complications,” a spokesman for the Glasgow International said. “He has been told by his doctors to take a six-month rest.”

In 2000 Humphries won a Tony award for his Broadway show, and in June last year, he became a Commander of the Order of the British Empire for services to entertainment.
