Drug addict kicked habit after her father forced her into rehab

A drug addict who become hooked on heroin after her boyfriend injected her has kicked the habit after her father forced her into rehab.
Lisa Carey, 20, was blowing up to £1000 a week on crack cocaine and heroin before dad Duncan locked her away from her bad lad boyfriend and booked her into rehab.
Lisa’s father knew nothing about her addiction until she turned up at a family party barely recognizable and covered in bruises.
She said: “It was dad’s 50th birthday and I’d ran out of excuses for not being able to make family occasions. As I walked through the door his jaw dropped. I didn’t have to say anything. Dad knew exactly what was going on.
“I was vulnerable and wanted to be loved. I wanted my boyfriend to love me and would have done anything to make him stay with me.
“When you’re hooked, you’re hooked and there’s nothing you can do about it.
“I needed heroin and before I knew it my boyfriend was injecting me five times a day.”
At the height of her addiction Lisa was mixing heroin with cannabis, alcohol, amphetamines and ecstasy. Before long she lost her job in a call center and dropped from a healthy 11 stone to a skeletal size zero.
She said: “I was out of control. One payday I spent £1200 on crack cocaine and heroin but it didn’t last long. Before the day was out we’d taken it all.
“Heroin is a horrible dirty drug. I was throwing up as many as ten times a day and couldn’t stomach food.”
Lisa believes she would still be an addict if her dad hadn’t torn her away from her boyfriend and forced her into the BAC O’Connor Center in Burton, Staffordshire.
She said: “I had two weeks to wait before I started rehab so had no choice but to go through withdrawal.
“Dad locked the house phones and took my mobile away so I couldn’t call my boyfriend for more drugs.
“Going cold turkey was the worst experience of my life. I lost control of my bowels and was so weak I could barely even hold a kettle. One minute I was sweating with a fever and the next shivering with cold.”
Lisa has been clean for over a year and is now living with new boyfriend Darren in Stoke- on-Trent.
She has not seen her ex boyfriend since her 16-week stint in rehab but believes he is still an addict.
Lisa believes Amy Winehouse will never kick her addiction while she is with Fielder-Civil.
The pair went to rehab together in August last year after Amy collapsed from an overdose but quit after just 48 hours.
Lisa said: “It’s impossible to give up drugs living with an addict. I realize that now but at the time I thought I loved my boyfriend. At one point my dad even had to restrain me because I tried to escape the house to see him.
“But after a few weeks in rehab I finally saw him for what he was and what he had put me through. I’m so glad to be free of that world.
“Living with an addict means you will always be dependent on that person and the drugs they take. If one falls off the wagon, the other one is definitely going to.
“It doesn’t seem like it at the time but the only way through is to break free, sort your head out and overcome your addiction on your own.”
