Jodie Foster stalker arrested

Posted by

Jodie FosterA man who stalked Jodie Foster through the post has been arrested for mailing a bomb threat to a Los Angeles airport.

Michael Smegal sent the two-time Oscar winner a string of anonymous letters and packages between 2004 and 2005, according to U.S reports.

One of the packages even contained a pre-paid mobile phone, to which he sent pictures of himself and his dog.

Now authorities say that between September 2007 and January 2008 he sent more than 100 identical threatening letters, with references to Foster, to celebrities, businesses, airports and other locations in Los Angeles.

Investigators say Smegal told them he had chosen airports because he believed they had a link to the Screen Actors Guild. And Smegal told the police that he believed SAG had made negative comments about Foster.

Court papers state that when interviewed by police in 2005, Smegal admitted sending Foster the letters and promised to stop. And they caught up with him again when DNA taken from letters sent to Foster in 2004 matched those sent in 2007.

Smegal, 42, was arrested on Tuesday and charged with mailing a threatening letter to the Van Nuys Airport last December. If convicted Smegal, of Holliston, Massachusetts, could be jailed for ten-years and fined up to $250,000.
