Amy Winehouse has suffered another setback in her bid to crack America — after being axed from a prestigious US charity event.
The 24-year-old ‘Rehab’ star had been granted a business visa for the US – unlike earlier this year when she had to miss the Grammy Awards because she was denied one.
But she has now been suddenly dumped from the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s annual Costume Institute Gala on May 5.
A source close to the singer says: “She has been told that she is no longer part of the program.
“She was really looking forward to going to America. She loves New York and has some close friends there.
“But now the trip is off. It seems Amy has slipped into her old ways and even her record label were concerned she wasn’t up to the trip.
“It will be a huge blow for her as it would have been a great platform to break America. They love her music over there, but Amy has yet to do a tour.”
A spokesman for the gala night confirmed to Britain’s Daily Mail newspaper that Amy would not be appearing, saying: “She was asked if she would be interested, and she was considered, but then we moved on from her.”
The singer, who has turned into a recluse in recent weeks, is suffering from a contagious skin infection that could be related to her drug abuse. She has told friends she is worried about losing her looks.
“Amy is staying at home as much as possible because she is so upset about her skin,” adds the source. “She is devastated her skin is in such a bad way, she’s very low.”
