Paul McCartney Plays Liverpool Concert to 36,000 Fans

Paul McCartneyPaul McCartney took to the stage in his native Liverpool this weekend and played to to almost 36,000 fans to celebrate the city’s year as the European Capital of Culture.

The former Beatle performed on a stage proclaiming “world capital of pop” at Liverpool FC’s Anfield stadium.

British band The Zutons opened the concert, followed by the Kaiser Chiefs.

Foo Fighters star Dave Grohl also joined Sir Paul on-stage. Footballer Wayne Rooney and fiancee Coleen McLoughlin were also at the concert.

Wet weather threatened to dampen the atmosphere, but the rain stopped as fans streamed into the stadium before the show.

“We’re going to have a good night out, that’s all I ever aim to do,” Paul told the crowd.

The concert will raise money for the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (Lipa), which McCartney set up in his old school, and the Nordoff-Robbins music charity.

In January, Ringo Starr performed at the opening ceremony on St George’s Plateau and Echo Arena Liverpool.

The concert is billed as the first and last global concert to be held at Anfield, home of Liverpool Football Club, although the stadium did host the Hillsborough Justice Concert in 1997.
