JOHNNY DEPP returned to his musical roots after reuniting with his rock band THE KIDS for a fundraiser at the weekend (beg29Aug08).

Depp took the stage strumming his guitar and singing backup vocals for the band during the 90-minute fundraising shows in Florida on Friday (29Aug08) and Saturday (30Aug08).

And the actor’s longtime girlfriend, Vanessa Paradis took their 9-year-old daughter Lily-Rose to the show, as the pair screamed in support of Depp from the 2,500-strong crowd.

Depp’s set supported the second annual Sheila Witkin Memorial Reunion Concert, honouring The Kids’ late manager, who was well known in South Florida’s music scene. All proceeds from the benefit go to the Dan Marino Foundation, which funds programs for children with special needs.

The 45-year-old actor joined The Kids when he was a high school student in Miramar, Florida moving to Los Angeles with them in search of a record deal.

Depp decided to pursue his acting career following their subsequent break-up, before the group reunited in 2007 for the cause.

MELISSA ETHERIDGE has urged her fans to support Democratic presidential nominee BARACK OBAMA – after changing the lyrics to one of her songs at a recent concert in honour of the politician.

The singer – who performed at last week’s (beg25Aug08) Democratic National Convention (DNC) – pledged her political preference at a Los Angeles concert on Friday (29Aug08).

Etheridge, wearing an Obama pin on her guitar strap, prompted the audience to erupt in applause when she adapted the lyrics of her hit song What Happens Tomorrow to highlight the Illinois senator.

She sang: “I believe a black man can work hard and succeed. And we could be content to believe that he can be in charge of the free. And be the president.”

Etheridge continued to encourage the crowd: “When I was there (at the DNC), I felt a great sense of hope. I felt a great sense of, finally, us coming together because it was people of all kinds there… I feel a huge change coming. I feel it… Call all your family to vote. It’s the most important thing you can do this year.”
