By WENN, May 28 2008

U2 frontman BONO has received an honorary degree from a Japanese university in recognition of his contributions to music and dedication to humanitarian causes.

The singer - who is currently in Japan to attend the fourth Tokyo International Conference on African Development - was cheered on by students at Keiko University as he collected the award on Wednesday (27May08), reports GigWise.com

And the rocker used his speech to urge Japanese leaders not to ignore impoverished Asia, reminding the wealthy south-east Asian nation that they were being watched by the rest of the world as the G8 summit approaches. The political G8 meeting - which is attended by global leaders - is due to take place in Hokkaido, Japan in July (08).
