Lydon Understands The Queen After Watching Mirren's Portrayal

By WENN, June 13 2008

Punk icon JOHN LYDON has a newfound respect for British monarch QUEEN ELIZABETH II after watching HELEN MIRREN portray her on the big screen.

The Sex Pistols star, who once sneered at royalty in the song God Save The Queen, admits he found Mirren's film The Queen hilarious, but it also helped him understand what the monarch went through when her former daughter-in-law Princess Diana was killed in a 1997 car crash.

He says, "I was rolling around on the floor with laughter - and at the same time empathising with the Queen.

"I understand what her role is and how deeply frustrating it is to be cartouched into a corset of rules and regulation that absolutely stifle creativity."
