LATEST: LINDSAY LOHAN's father has hit back at reports suggesting he has confessed to fathering a lovechild, insisting he has instructed his lawyers to get to the truth.

Michael Lohan admits to romancing the teenage girl's mother, Kristi Kaufmann, in 1995 during a period when he and his now ex-wife Dina had separated.

He says, "I met Christie in 1982 in Houston. In 1995, when I was separated from Dina, she contacted me that she was moving to Long Island.

"She was going through a divorce at the time. I was with her for a week."

Lohan insists he had no idea that his one-time mistress had given birth to a child after their romance, and Christie hit him with the bombshell news while he was in prison, serving time for a DUI and other charges in 2005.

He adds, "She contacted me to say she had a paternity test done that revealed the child's father was not her husband. She said I was the only other man she had been with."

But Lohan, a born-again Christian, isn't convinced he is the father of the 13-year-old girl.

He tells TV news show Extra, "My lawyers are dealing with this. When we find out the truth we will deal with it in the appropriate manner."

But Kaufmann, who is now married to a real estate agent in Canada, insists her romance with Lohan lasted much longer than he remembers and it's time he became the father her teenage daughter never had: "I just want to make sure the truth comes out. My daughter has a right to know who her father is - and it's Michael."
