Sci-fi writer THOMAS M. DISCH has died after shooting himself in the head.

The 68-year-old On Wings of Song author was found dead in his New York apartment on Saturday (05Jul08).

A keen poet, book reviewer and children's author, Disch's major achievement was in science-fiction literature - his books On Wings of Song, Camp Concentration and 334 featured among the 100 Best Sci-Fi Novels in a recent survey.

And his non-fiction work The Dreams Our Stuff is Made Of: How Science Fiction Conquered the World received a Hugo Award in 1999.
