Actor Larry Haines Dies at 89

Broadway actor and soap opera star LARRY HAINES has died at the age of 89.

Haines passed away last Thursday (17Jul08) at a Delray Beach, Florida hospital.

He had been admitted to the facility earlier that week (begs14Jul08), his attorney confirmed on Wednesday (23Jul08).

Haines first became known in the 1930s as a voice actor on radio crime series Gangbusters.

Decades later he took on perhaps his best-known role as Stu Bergman in the U.S. soap opera Search for Tomorrow. He played Bergman for almost the entire duration of the show's run - spanning from 1951 to 1986.

Haines' 35-year-long performance on the show won him two Daytime Emmy Awards, in 1976 and 1981.

The actor also enjoyed a successful career on Broadway, earning him several Tony Award nominations for his roles in 1966's Generations and 1969's Promises, Promises.

He also appeared in the 1968 film version of The Odd Couple and made television appearances on 1970s series including Maude and Kojak.

Haines is survived by one niece. His first wife, Gertrude Haines; second wife, Jean Pearlman Haines; and daughter, Debora, all died before him.
