Sir George Tops Producer Poll

August 19 2008

The BEATLES studio mastermind SIR GEORGE MARTIN has topped a new online poll to find the best producer of all time.

Inspired by the death of music mogul Jerry Wexler last week (ends15Aug08), Rolling Stone editors asked readers to vote for the best knob-twiddlers online over the weekend (16-17Aug08).

Martin was the survey's clear winner, with Def Jam founder Rick Rubin coming in second and Phil Spector third.

The top 10 is:

1. Sir George Martin

2. Rick Rubin

3. Phil Spector

4. Brian Eno

5. Brian Wilson

6. Nigel Godrich

7. Daniel Lanois

8. Brendan O'Brien

9. Steve Lillywhite

10. Quincy Jones

And...

Where is Lee Perry ?

Top 10 Producers?

I agree with the #1 choice as well as Spector and Wilson being in there, but how could anyone overlook Mutt Lang? He produced hit albums for Def Leppard, AC/DC, Foreigner, The Cars, Bryan Adams, Savoy Brown and The Corrs and Shania Twain.

what about Jack Douglas?

Jack Douglas has been overlooked on the top 10 producers, having produced John Lennon's Double Fantasy and many of AC/DC's albums, not to mention helping with The Who's "Whose Next" album and John Lennon's Imagine album....

One name glaringly absent....

TOM DOWD should at least be in the top 5 not just for the vast number of hits he either engineered or produced for Atlantic but for being the first real pioneer of the 8-track which he was using years before anyone else.
