Darren Day Banned From Driving
LATEST: British singer/actor DARREN DAY has had his licence revoked after admitting to driving whilst over the drink drive limit.
The 40-year-old pleaded guilty to the charge at Cardiff, Wales Magistrates Court on Wednesday (27Aug08) after he was stopped by police in the city centre in early hours of 18 June (08).
Cops claim they spotted him travelling at speed and running a red light. A police report stated that Day was unable to provide a breath test at the roadside, but registered almost twice the legal amount of alcohol in his blood when he was tested at a local police station.
Day told the court: "I'm a husband and I'm a father and I've never done anything like this before. I was away on tour and missing my family that night. I know you must hear this a lot but I hardly ever drink. I have never got behind the wheel of a car when I've had too much alcohol.
"My only intention was to move my car off a yellow line. I realise I was endangering people's lives and I'm truly sorry for that."
But despite his apology the star was given an 18-month ban.
District Judge Geraint Watkins said: "You were approaching twice the drink-drive limit. But I have taken into account the circumstances of the event and your guilty plea. You appear to be genuinely contrite."
As well as the ban, Day was also fined $1,295 (GBP700) and told to pay $212 (GBP115) costs.
