Johnny Depp: 'Playing The Riddler in Batman Film Would be Fun'

Hollywood hunk Johnny Depp could be about to solve the riddle of how to follow Heath Ledger's Joker in the next Batman movie.
The Pirates of the Caribbean star, 45, has described the prospect of playing madcap villain The Riddler in Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight sequel as "fun".
"I heard about that," says Depp of the rumors of his possible casting. "It seems like it'd be a fun gig for a while, yeah."
Ledger, 28, died of on accidental overdose in January this year. He is tipped for a posthumous Oscar for his role as The Joker in the film.
Nolan is expected to start work on his third Batman movie next year.
The Dark Knight -- which stars the likes of Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman and Morgan Freeman -- has become only the second film in Hollywood history to cross the $500 million mark at the U.S. box office.
The flick has taken just six weeks to reach the half-billion figure - half the time it took Titanic, which remains the only film to have made more at the U.S. domestic box office.
After Sunday's (Aug 31) estimates, The Dark Knight has now made a total of $502.4 million.

Johnny Depp as possible Riddler
Although I adore Johnny Depp, what about Edward Norton as the Riddler? Or Rupert Friend? And as far as the Penguin goes, how about Bruce Willis or Jack Black?
Quote edited in misleading way
You edited that quote in a misleading way. He in fact debunked the rumor, saying he hadn't been contacted about the Riddler thing at all. The media just invented that he was considered then cast for a movie that in fact hasn't been conceived or written yet and may never exist.
Aside from that I doubt very much Nolan (who had full control for the sequel and would for a third one) would cast Depp. Depp says he can't play a character he doesn't like and he is always softening his characters with sympathetic backstories, etc. Even for true life story Blow Depp made up and inserted lines that were untrue to make his drug dealer seem like a nicer, more likeable guy. That doesn't fit in Nolan's Batman.
joker
its funny that this came up, i don't think he should be the riddler, although i think that johnny depp would be an excellent joker if chris nolan were to use the joker in another film since heath is obviously gone, i mean, johnny depp and heath ledger both have similar faces, and if they're both wearing face paint then it'd be almost impossible to tell the difference, and i know johnny depp could definately pull off that psychotic type of character just like heath, it'd be brilliant.... or maybe he could be both the joker and the riddler... either way, he should be joker god damnit.
also...
fuck that, danny devito should be the only one to be penguin, fuck everybody else, nobody could ever be better than him.
joker/johnny
I think Nolan would be open to sympathetic villain in the Riddler. The Joker holds the chaos for chaos sake card, but Ras Al Ghul and Two Face do have their reasons (justified or not) for who they are. My fear with Depp as the Riddler in Nolan's world would be that Depp is very animated in his roles and I would be concerned with him bordering on campy in a film that has darker tones. However, Depp is a supurb actor and if he were cast, I'm sure he could adjust to the director's vision.
spelling
The flick has taken just six weeks to reach the half-(b)illion figure.
Idiots.
