The rumors are true Disney has announced that they expect the new Indiana Jones 5 to be in theaters July 19, 2019 and will include Harrison Ford and director Steven Spielberg.
News of the release came out just hours ago via Disney chairman Alan Horn: “Indiana Jones is one of the greatest heroes in cinematic history, and we can’t wait to bring him back to the screen in 2019. “It’s rare to have such a perfect combination of director, producers, actor and role, and we couldn’t be more excited to embark on this adventure with Harrison and Steven.”
Franchise vet and president of Lucas Films Kathleen Kennedy and producer Frank Marshall have made it clear in recent months that “there is only one Indiana Jones at this time and that is of course Harrison Ford”. This statement more than likely comes due to Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull flop and the company not wanting to work with the at times troubled actor Shai LaBeouf. Kennedy also said in an interview with THR last year: “We’re all trying to figure out when the right time is to step back in. Harrison really wants to do it; Steven really wants to do it. We’ve kicked around a couple of story ideas, but beyond that, I don’t know yet. I think there will be one, we’ll certainly move forward with Indy. But right now, everybody’s just focused on Star Wars.”
Steven Spielberg has been named the director in the up coming film so fans are super excited to say the least, though there has been no word on whether or not George Lucas will have any input. Since buying Lucasfilm, Disney has also stated that more Indiana Jones were on the way for sure, but it wanted to deal with its juggernaut Star Wars first and make sure that all aspects of the Jones squeal was in place before any announcements.
