(Gasp!) Are we kidding?! Did we just write a headline that said someone is replacing our beloved JLaw?! We did (double gasp)! Now hold your pie throwing and your sassy commenting until we’ve laid out our case. First, let’s just be clear. There is only one JLaw, and we love her. She’s “adorkable,” talented, and is a top movie earner, money-maker, and Oscar winner. However, she’s worked really hard over the last few years and it’s time she takes the summer off and hands the reigns over to someone else. That person is Margot Robbie.
Here’s a quick side-by-side comparison of the actors:
Has 2 films releasing in 2016
Plays Mystique in X-Men (May)
Has one movie in the works; Is writing a screenplay with Amy Schumer
Has 3 films releasing in 2016
Plays Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad (Aug)
Has 4 movies in the works; 2 of them she’s producing via LuckyChap Entertainment
You might not know her but you’ve seen her. She might look familiar because she’s everywhere. She’s Margot Robbie, she’s 25, she’s from Australia and she’s taken the Hollywood “A-list” by storm! Earlier this week it was announced that Robbie will be portraying troubled figure skater Tonya Harding in the biopic of “I, Tonya.” Though there is no director for the film yet, it is being produced by Robbie’s production company LuckyChap Entertainment. Another movie Robbie is producing is based on Vaughn Stein’s Thriller “Terminal.” According to the Daily Mail, “Terminal” is described by Robbie as a, “British version of Pulp Fiction and Sin City.”
The former soap opera actress got her start in independent films in her late teens. She went on to star in the popular Australian soap opera “Neighbours.” She left Australia in 2011 to pursue bigger goals in Hollywood. “I kind of left everyone behind in Australia – all my friends and my family and I had to break up with my boyfriend.”
It didn’t take her long to land roles. In just a few short years she’s worked with Martin Scorsese, Leonardo DiCaprio, Matthew McConaughey, Will Smith, Jared Leto, and Samuel L. Jackson just to name drop a few fellas in the biz. Some would be intimidated acting alongside Oscar winners. In her IMDB bio she states, “When you look at movies, the lead girl is always gorgeous and thin. There is a stereotype that you need to look a certain way and when you get in the business you really feel the pressure….I just try to keep healthy more so than trying to be thin.”
Robbie’s breakout role came playing Jordan Belfort’s (Leonardo DiCaprio) second wife Naomi Lapaglia in “The Wolf of Wall Street.” The film, directed by Martin Scorsese was nominated for five Oscars and won AFI’s Movie of the Year. Robbie was nominated for Breakthrough Performance at the MTV Movie Awards and won Best Female Newcomer at the Empire Awards, UK.
In 2014 she starred in “Suite Francaise” and was nominated for Breakthrough Actress at the Young Hollywood Awards. It was on set of the film that she met her boyfriend, British Assistant Director, Tom Ackerley.
In 2015 she starred with Will Smith in “Focus.” The movie only grossed $53 million but the duo was nominated for an MTV Movie Award for Best Kiss. Also in 2015 she had a cameo in the Oscar winning movie “The Big Short.” The movie starred Christian Bale, Brad Pitt, Ryan Gosling, Steve Carell, and Marisa Tomei. Rounding out the year she starred in “Z for Zachariah.” The film was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival.
Currently, she’s co-staring with Tina Fey in “Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot.” The movie, still in theaters also features veteran actor Billy Bob Thorton. One of the producers of “Whiskey” is Lorne Michaels from Saturday Night Live. That’s one thing this talented actress has yet to do, host SNL. It’s not too late to see her on there this season. Current cast member Jay Pharaoh has been trying to get her on the show since last year. We’ll wait and see if it happens.
This summer audiences will get to know her better as she plays two iconic female characters; Jane, and Harley Quinn. In July she can be seen portraying Jane Porter, wife of Tarzan, played by movie hunk Alexander Skarsgard. The movie also stars Samuel L. Jackson. “The Legend of Tarzan” is in theaters July 1, 2016.
In August, she’ll hit the big screen as the sexy, deranged, Dr. Harlean F. Quinzel/Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad. Robbie will play the sometimes girlfriend of Jared Leto’s “Joker” in an all-star cast. Will Smith, Viola Davis, Common, and Cara Delevingne are just a few of her cast mates. “Squad members” surprised fans at Comic Con last year and released the first trailer for the movie. This year’s Comic Con, which comes just a few weeks before the movie’s premiere will no doubt have plenty of Harley Quinn Cosplay costumes. Though there is no confirmation that the Squad will be at Comic Con you can pretty much bet some if not all will make an appearance. “Suicide Squad” hits theaters August 5, 2016.
So there you have it, an impressive body of work, a ton of upcoming projects, and Hollywood golden girl looks. That’s what makes Margot Robbie, the new “IT” girl of Hollywood or at the very least the fastest rising star in Hollywood for 2016!
